Coral reefs in Miami florida are being wiped out by a dredging program carried out by the U.S army corps of engineers in order to allow bigger ships into Miami. What is dredging? Dredging is a form of drilling and chipping a way sediment in order to deepen a harbor, lake, or bay. The problem is that the dredging is not only destroying life on the ocean floor, but the sediment that is also drifting to nearby coral reefs and either burying them, or cutting of their sunlight. The Miami bay used to be covered in these colorful and beautiful colonies that supported huge amounts of life. Now the bay is gray from the sediment and coral reef experts are worried that it will never recover. The coral reefs were there for more than just beauty, and a habitat to fish. The coral reefs have helped protect Miami from Hurricane season. The reefs acted as a buffer to huge waves that could easily wipe out Miami’s beeches, and housing. The only other natural buffer was mangrove trees, which surprise! Surprise! Humans have removed as well. On top of all this Miami will be one City that will feel the affect of sea level rise which will make it even more susceptible to flooding and hurricane destruction. I strongly disagree with what the U.S is doing and hope that Miami doesn’t feel natures wrath.
