The Third set of Locks Project is a 5.25 billion dollar construction project that will widen the Panama canal so that the larger container ships will be able to pass through. The original canal built in the early 20th century is one of the greatest engineering feats still today. This canal was a breakthrough for world trade and allows huge shipments of goods to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific ocean or the other way around. Before the canal ships had to Sail around the tip of South America, which took a long time, led to ship wrecks, and was not worth the trouble. The Panama canal changed this and created a trade route to Asia. The only problem is now, many Ships are too large for the canal which is destroying profits and hindering trade. There are also now competitors to the panama canal, There a routes that use ice breaker ships to pass through over Canada and Russia.
A Chinese Company has already proposed to build a canal through Nicaragua that Nicaragua has agreed to. Though this seems a bit unrealistic because the Panama canal is undergoing an expansion that will allow almost all of the large container ships. There is just one huge problem, why do we need this huge expansion? This canal is not only being expanded because of human greed, but also because the canal helps ship food to the huge ever expanding human population. The expansion to the canal will destroy panama’s environment. There is also a huge possibility that something could backfire because of human error or just because it is such a daunting project. To sum it up there is no good solution to this, we need the Panama canal even if it destroys panamas ecosystems.
