Last week a 15 year old girl was brutally pummeled in a McDonald's in Brooklyn. Apparently this girl threw the first punch, but was soon after beaten by 8 to 10 other girls.
It blows my mind how these teenagers can have such a strong "pack mentality"... The thought that "because my friends is fighting this girl, I need to fight her too". It's so unnecessary. It's hard to find the words to describe my frustration. Why is it necessary for 10 girls to go up against this one individual? Even after she was beaten to the ground, 16 year old Aniah Ferguson continued to kick and stomp on her face. This girl was done. She no longer had the ability to fight, she was laying on the ground with her arms over her head, she was finished. There was no reason why Ferguson had to continue beating the crap out of her...
Another issue that I have with this situation is that the McDonald employees called the police twice within six minutes of the beating, and they didn't answer, or arrive until after it was over. Why did it take so long for the cops to arrive? Is it because it's BK and these kind of things happen all the time?
When you think about incidents like this- street fights and beatings that have been happening since before the 90's amongst members of the same community- gangs, and movies like Boys In The Hood- I cant help but wonder how much of a difference it would've made had the police been around when they needed to be. I live in Bedford-Stuyvesant/Crown Heights and there used to be cops patrolling the streets everyday. But the one day that a man gets shot on my block they weren't there. Its almost like they are never there when needed, or they just don't care. Yes fights happen all the time in the streets but that doesn't give the police forces the right to not pay close attention.
