It was a fine, slightly chilly evening, with the polluted skies shining bright grey and the winds howling. I was supposed to be doing my APUSH homework, which required of course submitting the assignment online, to conserve paper. And as I decided to break and check my facebook feed, the first thing I found was a shameless post about the pollution in China happening at the moment, and I wondered, why do we have so much pollution? I looked up, and a familiar 7 billion number flashed during one of my searches. I thought, 7 billion is not that many, but apparently, it is enough to cause global warming and extinction of so many species.
We have wasted so much of our natural resources, have altered so many environments, killed so many species, and somehow it is not enough. After a brief research, I found out that we, US, consume over 24% of world's energy alone. US constitutes only 5% of World's population, yet we consume SO much? And the thing is after US, there is a whole line of nations attempting to emulate US. The world simply consumes too much, and I am not talking about the third world nations, I am talking about the nations who are run by the invincible obsession and need for consuming things, with high lavish life standards, with little appreciation for the given, nations that will refuse to give up their wealth (and it's not like anyone can make them do so). And is there a chance of us actually going green? Probably not quickly. And is there something we can do to the current population? No! There are no natural means of making sure the population is stable, no matter what plague or war happens, humans always grow in number. It is estimated that only by 2050, mere 45 years away, the world will be made of 9.6 billion people. That is a LOT, and a lot of those people who cause damages to the natural resources are going to be first world nation citizens. Something must be done to curb the population growth rate, to slow it down, decreasing it would be neigh impossible anyway. We do not need a population that is large, not in the modern day and age. By simply allowing people to reproduce like rabbits, we drain natural resources, and end up with having children of the future have lower life standards. We intake more than we can produce, and it will only be a matter of centuries until earth is completely cleared of its resources.
Nowadays, we simply do not require children for labour purposes, we have machines to aid us. I believe that despite the immoral or inhumane connotation human population control has, we must attempt to curb it, especially in US. Earth, at the rate we want to intake, cannot house so many people, and if we ever want to have a population of 9 billion, we must first take serious reforms in our consumerist lifestyle, which itself will take a long time to occur.
