I cannot believe the video I just watched. When I listen to people talk about Fox News I sometimes think they are over generalizing, like putting Bill O'Reily and Rosanna Scotto in the same category. But, watching this opened my eyes to so much about the media.
Shannon Bream, after the segment speaking about the Paris Attack, leaving twelve dead, opened to the table for them to discuss, made a very unusual comment. Although the table was already very heated, with another anchorman saying that he thinks police should be as armed as the military and should walk about with heavy machinery, Bream changed the topic to a very heavy topic, saying that attackers have a distinct look and that people need to look out for that. At first I was confused with what she was saying, but then I realized she was practically defending racial profiling and race related stops at airports, interactions with police and every other thing happening in this country right now.
Although we have seen attackers in all shapes and sizes, we still generalize that darker skin, or cultural differences make a person a criminal or not. This is a huge issue. Fox News and other media outlets have gotten away with this in the past. Bill Maher and his Islamophobic comments on his episode with Ben Affleck, almost everything Bill O'Reily ever says. We are watching white men and women make these incredibly terrible insulting and racist remarks happening and say nothing about it, claiming freedom of speech, but when a Quran gets pulled out, or a sign gets made then we're thuggish and ruining the country. What's ruining the country is our ignorant view of the world and not realizing that we are an incredibly racist country.
We need to stop generalizing criminals, importantly. We've seen the most famous terrorists not be described as terrorists, like the KKK or Ted Bundy. Terrorism is destroying humanity, and they destroyed and even keep destroying humanity. I'm not saying that ISIS or Boko Horam are not important to talk about because they are, we need to speak about these things. I'm saying that the solution does not lie in stopping every Muslim or Minority on the street, the solution is being prepared and protecting our people, and yes that includes our "criminal-looking" people too.
