Should we still be taking standardized tests in school?
I have attended public school for 11 years now and I know that the one thing I hated the most, and still do, are the yearly standardized tests: Whether it be the regents, SAT’s, or the ACT. It seems as if the whole curriculum for the school year were all based on preparing for these several tests. As I got older, I started to notice how little (some) teachers teach actual information that will not be used in the standardized tests. There are only a few that I know at LaGuardia High School who teach both regents material as well as other information that they believe is important to learn. Most of my classes at LaGuardia are regent’s classes and therefore everyday is “quick, quick, quick! We need to move on to the next topic to cover everything on the regents!!” I think that this way of teaching does not help the child at all, we fast forward everything and the student does not have the time to absorb and appreciate the information they have just received. Yes, I still do believe that we should have tests like the regents to enable us to see our growth and process through our school years. However, our classes should incorporate more lessons that are beneficial to know, not because it will be on a standardized test but because it is important to have to benefit you in the future. So, what do you say? Should we be minimizing the regents and SAT’s?
