You will not be infected with Ebola unless you take it upon yourself to interact with someone who is displaying Ebola symptoms. The symptoms of Ebola are hard to miss:
• Nausea and vomiting.
• Diarrhea (may be bloody)
• Red eyes.
• Raised rash.
• Chest pain and cough.
• Stomach pain.
• Severe weight loss.
• Bleeding, usually from the eyes, and bruising (people near death may bleed from other orifices, such as ears, nose and rectum)
You will not be infected if you avoid these charming individuals. The virus only survives in bodily fluids; therefore, it cannot be spread through the air. It also cannot survive on surfaces where bodily fluids are no longer present. Ebola also does not spread through surfaces that are contaminated with saliva or mucus until the late stages of the disease, as the viral load contained in these fluids is very low when compared with blood, vomit, and feces. So unless someone leaves some combination of these three fluids on a subway pole, you should be fine taking the subway. It’s also unlikely that someone who has the aforementioned symptoms will be taking the subway, or going anywhere, except the hospital. Still, you should be washing your hands often, just because it’s a good thing to do. So remember these three things:
1. If you see someone who obviously has Ebola, turn around.
2. Wash your hands.
3. Don’t panic.
