Since 2001, Palestinian militants from the terrorist organization Hamas have launched thousands of rockets and other weapons from the Gaza Strip. These weapons have been aimed at major Israeli cities, kibbutzim, and other populated areas. These areas include Haifa, Jersualem, Tel-Aviv, Jaffa, Ben Gurion Airport, Be'er Sheba, and even areas in the West Bank, which is operated by the Palestinian Authority and is largely Palestinian–not Israeli. Israel is able to defend itself in some areas using the Iron Dome, an advanced machine that locates missiles in the atmosphere with a trajectory that would take them to populated areas and destroy them with another rocket. Hamas is a Palestinian Islamic terrorist organization that has been in operation since 1987. Their tactics and weapons include suicide bombings, long and short range missiles, and border infiltrations. One of their most recent and most notable tactics, however, is not something deadly; it is persuading others to hate the existence of Israel and its people. Every country has a right to defend itself against terrorists.
Hamas uses their murder of innocent civilians to demonize the Israel Defense Forces and the people of Israel. According to the attached article from the New York Times, Hamas launches and stores their rockets in buildings and institutions that people use everyday in Gaza. Rockets are launched from mosques, schools, hospitals, crowded neighborhoods, and apartment buildings. 1.7 million people live in Gaza, which is about 139 square miles, in comparison to Queens, which is 178.3 square miles. Israel is much larger than Gaza; however, it is still roughly the size of New Jersey. According to the article, Hamas draws backlash fire from Israel toward populated areas, effectively raising the death toll. This, in turn, makes Gaza seem like the victim–and this falsehood has been spreading rapidly. When Israel discovered the existence of tunnels built through populated areas and under the borders of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel ordered a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip in order to destroy the tunnels that allowed Hamas militants to go into Israel undetected. More than 300 people died in Gaza because of the ground operation by the IDF. When launching rockets, Israel sounds alarms and signals that tell people to hide because of an incoming rocket, but often, Hamas makes people stay in place so the death toll will be higher. Israel also tries to lend a helping hand by trying to battle poverty in Gaza so they do not have to attack Israel so they can have its land and wealth. Israel sends concrete, money, and other supplies to build hospitals, schools, and other buildings to improve the quality of life in Gaza; however, Hamas used these supplies to build the tunnels to infiltrate Israeli borders. Hamas, the government of Gaza, does not do anything to improve the quality of life for its citizens, but rather to target Israelis and demonize the state of Israel.
In Israel, when there is a rocket approaching a populated area, sirens sound and people run into bomb shelters until the sirens end. This has created a culture of fear and terror in Israel, especially near the Gaza border. In southern Israeli cities, there has been an extremely significantly sharp rise of anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and miscarriages among men, women, and children of all ages. When Israel is attacked, the world is silent; however, when Gaza is attacked, the world is outraged and condemns Israel for its actions, its defense, and its right to exist.
The death toll in Gaza has sparked numerous protests and riots against Israel across the world, especially in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, as shown by the pictures below. Because Jews feel a very strong connection to Israel, this has created a strong sense of divide between Jews and non-Jews and anti-semitism, as exemplified by this article. Hamas has successfully won the media war against Israel because they have made Israel seem like the antagonist in this war. Hamas is the real killer of the people in Gaza, not Israel. In France, a strong wave of anti-semitism has reared its ugly head. On July 20, 2014, in Sarcelles, France, a Jewish-owned pharmacy was set on fire. Nine days later, someone tried to firebomb a synagogue in Wuppertal, Germany. Keep in mind that this was all happening during and after the IDF's ground operation in Gaza. In May 2014, four people were fatally shot at the Jewish Museum in Brussels, Belgium. At Rallies in France, Germany, and Belgium, people shouted "Death to the Jews!" and "Gas the Jews!" Europe has even seen a decrease in the Jewish population since the riots; they were moving to Israel. In the picture below, someone at the riot in Sarcelles, France is seen raising his arm to heil Hitler.
So after all this, does Israel have the right to defend itself from a terrorist organization that wants nothing but the destruction of Israel and its people? It does because any country and population of people is allowed to defend itself from dangerous people and hatred.
