Selfies should be considered completely harmless. They really are just a small way for people to get attention by putting the best version of themselves out for the world to see. When someone takes a selfie and posts it to the internet, you can't say it's not for attention at that point, but there's nothing wrong with wanting a little attention or for your friends to comment or like your picture and tell you that you look good in it. All humans are inherently a little narcissistic, and that's not a bad thing at all. You want to look good for the internet or wherever that selfie's going to end up. Taking selfies is only an issue when (like in the above link) someone takes it too far and ends up dying. But that's an extreme case, and I still believe that selfies are completely fine and normal for people to want to do. It's no different from organized class portraits or taking pictures for a family album / any situation where a picture will be taken of you. The only difference is that you're taking a photo of yourself, and that seems to have a negative connotation.
